The word Vampire (Vampir, Vampyre) has oblique origins, but researchers and scholars for the most part agree that it can be traced to the Slavic Tongue. There have been continuous debates however, as to its etymological sources. The word may have come from the Lithuanian wempti ("to drink"), or from the root pi ("to drink"), with the prefix va or av. Other suggested roots have included the Turkish uber ("witch"), and the Serbo-Croation pirati ("to blow").
A vampire is an energy feeder with varying levels of psychic and empathic abilities which allow for manipulation of and the taking and giving of the life force energy. A vampire comes into being showing varying signs of energy deficiencies with usually a slow awareness of psychic ability. There is a significant interest in energy feeding such as at musical shows, with a lover, and/or an interest in the energy of blood, although the latter is far less common.
Vampirism is both a state of being and a life path not a choice, and is then based on both need and ability. True vampires have energy needs unlike most humans and the ability to utilize that energy for health. A vampire's energy needs range from the pranic or dense form such as that found in blood to psychic/empathic energy found in the emotions and mental energies, to the environment such as the energy of storms.
There are a fair number of views of what awakening actually is. For the purposes of this piece of writing, I will give my own view of what this means as it is relevant to understanding this article. To me, awakening is recognition. It is the understanding that you are more than just an everyday human. You have discovered that there is a part of life that goes unrecognized by most and it has changed you in a significant way. This change is not just psychological, but it is all encompassing.
The purpose of this writing is to discuss the vampyric condition and its relation to spirituality. It would seem self evident that vampyrism is a condition of the spirit/soul/Qi or whatever you wish to call it. Some would suggest a physical reason for vampyrism and there are documented medical conditions that would suggest vampyric behavior, but those patients are clearly not vampyres.

Lately it seems this is the most popular question... "What it's like?" I never quite know how to answer this. It is such a broad question... I wonder, does she mean the hunger? Does he mean the day to day life? What does he/she know, or think she knows, about what I am? When someone comes to me (online) and asks I usually never quite know what they are expecting. Do they expect me to be gothic in fashion, talk with a transylvanian lisp and walk the streets of my home town at night searching for my next victim? Or do they know what it's really like...
These days there is a lot of confusion over what defines real vampirism, not the least of which comes from the vampire "community" itself. It seems that with the wave of Hollywood sci-fi and pop fiction - role-playing games - mass marketing - mass media - and the internet, real vampirism has become intertwined, mixed and confused on many levels away from its long held traditions of only a generation ago.(This too is something that I am sure that anyone from the pre-1980's Pagan communities can relate to as well.)
I have often wondered how to become closer to the nature of the vampire. Most of us here consider ourselves vampires, but what does that really mean? We read the stories in modern literature from Bram Stoker to Brian Lumley to Anne rice as well as watch the movies. We marvel and are touched by what they represent and we wonder. Are we like them? What does it truly mean to call ourselves vampire?
