Nosferatu - Blue Öyster Cult

The song is based on the 1922 German silent film, "Nosferatu" a loose adaptation of Bram Stokers' Vampire Novel Dracula. The lyrics mimic the story line of that film. Joe Bouchard closes Spectres on a creepy note with this ode to the classic German expressionist vampire movie courtesy of another lyric by Helen Wheels.

Heavy on the mellotron-like Freeman synthesizer and rolling piano, the band successfully creates a symphonic, but claustrophobic (coffin-like?) atmosphere with a simple but hauntingly effective melody line and guitar line Arthur Brown would have approved of. Joe's vocal is much more assured on this and the layered horrortorio choir on the chorus is very effective.

Like a vintage musclecar of the 60's, the heavy metal band Blue Öyster Cult roars into the 90's touring the world. Blue Öyster Cult's trademark is searing guitars, and haunting songs of other realms such vampires and extra-terrestrials. Blue Öyster Cult's style is difficult to catagorize however, they use elements of heavy metal, swing, and guitar, piano, and keyboard solos. A thinking person's band, Blue Öyster Cult's cryptic lyrics of science fiction, horror, mystery and humor, give fans layers of intrigue to uncover and ecclectic melodies to savor.

Nosferatu Lyrics

Deep in the heart of germany
Lucy clutched her breast in fear
She heard a beat of her lover's heart
For weeks she raved in dreams he appeared
From far off transylvania

Only a woman can break his spell
Pure in heart who will offer herself
To nosferatu

This ship pulled in without a sound
The faithful captain long since cold
He kept his log till the bloody end
Last entry read "rats in the hold.
My crew is dead - I fear the plague"

Only a woman can break his spell
Pure in heart who will offer hefself

Mortal terror reigned
Sickness now then horrible death
Only Lucy knew the truth
And at her window
Nosferatu

So chaste, so calm, she gave herself
To the pleasure of the dreaded master
He sucked the precious drops of life
Throughout the long and cold dark night

One last goodbye, he was blinded by love
One last goodbye, he was blinded by love
Blinded by love

He screamed with fear, he'd stayed too long in her room
The morning sun had come too soon
The spell was broken with a kiss of doom
He vanished into dust, left her all alone

Only a woman can break his spell
Pure in heart, who will offer herself

Only a woman can break his spell
Pure in heart who will offer herself
To nosferatu
